You must be at least 18 to get a regular driver’s license. But you can get a learner’s permit at 15 and a provisional driver’s license at 16. Expect to be tested whatever your age. Depending on your age and whether you’re seeking an original license or a renewal, you could end up taking the written, sign, vision and road tests. You’ll need to be able to prove you are who you say you are. The ID you take must contain your full name and your birth date. You’ll also need your Social Security number. Call the driver’s license office to find out what forms of ID are acceptable. You’ll also need to prove you have liability insurance if you’re applying for an original North Carolina license. Your license will be good for between four and eight years because the state is in the process of switching to a five-year license renewal program. Eventually, all drivers will renew their licenses every five years, starting at age 20. In the meantime, the license fee is $4.25 for each year that it’s valid. |
